The auditorium of the Skaggs School of Pharmacy at the UCSD School of Medicine
is the venue for the Symposium.
Parking wll be available on the surface lot adjacent. Signs will
direct you from the main campus entrance on Gilman Drive.
La Jolla Shores
Highly recommended are the La Jolla Beach and Tennis Club (www.ljbtc.com)
and the La Jolla Shores Hotel (www.ljshoreshotel.com)
which is next door and under the same ownership. Both places are relaxed but
understatedly elegant and have access to the beach, so they may be a bit pricey
but arguably worth it. The beach can be a little foggy and cool in February,
though it should compare well to most places at this time of year-- and we may
luck out and have it be beautiful! Near the beach, but probably a bit more
reasonable is the Hotel La Jolla (www.hotellajolla.com/).
"Downtown" La Jolla
Don't be deceived by the coopting of the term "La Jolla Village" by the area
near UCSD, where the signs from the highway exit pointed to the Village. This is
the real Village. \nA short drive away from the Shores (about 1 mile, or a
slightly shorter harrowing walk along the cliffs for the not-so-faint of heart)
are many hotels in the shopping and gallery section of La Jolla, the most
elegant of which are the La Valencia (www.lavalencia.com),
the "Zen-inspired" Hotel Parisi (www.hotelparisi.com)
and the Grande Colonial (www.thegrandecolonial.com).
Other choices include the Inn by the Sea (now Best Western I by the S,
lajollainnbythesea.com).')"
Estancia
Just across Torrey Pines Road from the UCSD campus, south of the Salk Institute
and near the hang-glider port, there is the UCSD-run Hotel Estancia (www.estancialajolla.com).
It is within walking distance (but a fairly brisk walk) to the Medical School
and Skaggs auditorium.
"Torrey Mesa"
Along the cliffs north of the campus on the way to Del Mar is the Torrey Pines
preserve, the eponymous golf course, and two nice hotels. They are the Lodge at
Torrey Pines (lodgeattorreypines.com)
and the Hilton La Jolla Torrey Pines (www.hiltonlajollatorreypines.com).
They are about a 3 mile drive from the beach and about 1.5 mile from the campus.
"La Jolla Village" - near UCSD
Near the UCSD campus and "the" 5 (as we say) are several other hotels. These are
in a nice but generic suburban setting, about 1 mile from UCSD and 2.5 miles
from the beach. East on La Jolla Village Drive is the Marriott La Jolla (http://www.marriott.com/hotels/travel/sanlj-san-diego-marriott-la-jolla/.
Closest of all to the UCSD campus are a) the
Residence Inn, right next to the campus entrance nearest the Med School,
and b) the
Sheraton La Jolla.
